The Ecphorizer

The Escalator
Malcolm Scott Mac Kenzie

Issue #32 (April 1984)

From cave to silo
hearts of rote
with banners
crowd a monument,
the escalator,
concerned and glad.

Gesticulators
above the stairs
pontificate their tape;
in streaming tongues,
with hardy stares,
they exhort consumers;
confusing fears
draw higher heights
before exploding wonders,
for
grace in digits
appeals most
to obsessive, functional cares.

Escalating upward
with every floating step,
the people buy their wares
for arms,
bands and coats and stickers;
they accuse their mirrored twins
buried in siloed psyche,
then the tapes are filed away
for clouded, tardy programs.
