In 1938 the voters of Milton, Washington, elected a mule named Boston Curtis as their Republican precinct committeeman. His name had been entered on the ballot by the Democratic mayor of Milton, who placed Boston's hoofprints on the filing papers and signed as legal witness. The mayor said he sponsored the mule in order to prove his theory that most voters are careless.
