The Ecphorizer

More Magic at Goose Pond (correction)
Gareth Penn

Issue #38 (October 1984)

Gareth Penn writes: "I knew that Reagan was trying to balance the budget by raising the prices of GPO publications (see The Ecphorizer September 1984, p.22) But I was very surprised to find out that he has also ordered the U. S. Geological Survey to save money by printing its maps in the form of poems (see The Ecphorizer September 1984, p.13)."

I wrote to Gareth: "Well, if one plots the two's complement of the binary representation of the first letter of each line of the poem..."

No dice. Here, then, is the map that should have accompanied "Sympathetic Magic at Goose Pond" in the September issue.

As I'm putting this issue together for upload to The Ecphorizer site in October, 2007, I cannot help but wonder why the original editor decided that this important addition to Penn's earlier article was to be listed in the Contents under "Humor."  Maybe he knew something we don't know?
