Issue #69 (August 1987)

Those of us with cat minds taught to do dog tricks
Toss bright foil mice for the amusement's glitter,
Fetch papers full of our personal news
And lay them at the feet of whoever will read.
We forget what a cat does
Bending over a pool of water,
Lapping its image to pieces
In order to drink.

Who knows what a cat is
When it isn't there?

Poet LISA YOUNT writes us that "a poem is the shortest distance between two points for people who don't think in straight lines." She lives "within cultural commuting distance of Berkeley," CA.
