Among many stories that the English tell about the Irish, one took place during the Great Rebellion of 1798. The rebels had been particularly incensed by the behavior of an English banker, one John Beresford, so they collected a vast quantity of the notes issued by his bank and burned them publicly with much shouting and glorification. The next day the banker, now relieved so unexpectedly of a large part of his liabilities, retired happily to London, a very wealthy man.
