there from his white
walled port
of entry
bulwarked behind the oak desk
swiveling in his walnut turret
he checks papers and permits and licenses
keeps Kansas safe
protects us from
sick hogs
smutty wheat
infectious cows
dangerous drivers
overloaded trucks
and illegal carnies
turning them back
into Nebraska
where they disappear
forever
