Gramps is it
at the state line

there from his white
walled port
of entry

bulwarked behind the oak desk
swiveling in his walnut turret
he checks papers and permits and licenses

keeps Kansas safe

protects us from
sick hogs
smutty wheat
infectious cows
dangerous drivers
overloaded trucks
and illegal carnies

turning them back
into Nebraska

where they disappear

forever

And now her best crop is her peas.
