Despite a variety of Blue Laws, the colonial governor of New York and New Jersey from 1702 to 1708 was a flaming transvestite. He commonly dressed in women' s outfits, rouged and powdered his face, and cruised the town in drag. For his official portrait he wore a low-cut evening gown and held a fan. Edward Hude, Viscount Cornbury, was finally fired as governor -- not for his sexual behavior, but for taking bribes.
