The Ecphorizer

Le Coin d'Archimède 3

Issue #12 (August 1982)

Jack and Joan Smith gave a typical Mensa dinner party. They invited a novelist, a computer programmer, a bridge editor, an engineer, and the spouses of each of the four. The ten diners sat informally at a round table, men and women in alternate seats. No wife sat next to her husband. The members of the party were well known to each other except that Marie Stevens had never before met the computer programmer and Susan Bright had not met the novelist. The novelist's wife sat between the bridge editor's husband and the computer programmer. The computer programmer's wife sat on the left of the host. Bill Brown sat between Susan Bright and the engineer. George Stevens sat on the right of the hostess and on the left of Cheryl Brown. Marie Stevens sat next to the engineer's husband. Susan Bright's husband's name is Ken and Sally Anders' husband's name is Steve. How was everyone seated?

Last Month's Solution. The answer is 52 people. Perhaps the easiest way to solve this type of problem is to make a table. In the one to the left, + indicates with costume, - without costume, and () indicates where information was given.

Editor's Notes

Issue #12 (August 1982)

This month we welcome DIANE REYNOLDS to our staff. She will also continue to help with the Intelligencer where she has been doing many Good Things.

Sandy Maiwald is changing his name to Nicholas U. Dobbis-Turner. Really. Sandy -- er, Nick -has a rational reason for doing this, but says that it takes half an hour to expound it.

We get occasional messages from our more distant readers, complaining that it is the middle of the month and the magazine has not arrived. Nil desperandum. Unlike Mensa newsletters, THE ECPHORIZER is not scheduled to arrive by the first. Normally it is mailed between the first and the seventh; the US Mule being what it is, it can arrive as late as the 25th. But if you haven't gotten it by then, please do write. We will be happy to send you a replacement.
