the beets are ready
plumped and shouldering
out of their rows
I pull them
shake them
tumble them
into my basket
tussle them to the back porch
dump them
hose them
plop them
back into the basket
carry them to the kitchen
to can
my rubies of summer

| About |
| Sheryl L. Nelms |
SHERYL L. NELMS, balloonist and multiply-published poet, took the time to send us a post card from Tucson, AZ. It shows five fire-engine red chickens, four electric blue, and three chrome yellow. It's something about the desert air, apparently.
