The Ecphorizer

Letters

Issue #06 (February 1982)

Dear Editor:
I can't finish Richard Holmes' list of English kings, but I can offer the following, which appears in elegant hand written script in my great-grandfather's composition book, under date of June 22, 1846:

The Sovereigns of England

First William the Norman, then William his son,
Henry, Stephen, and Henry then Richard and John,
Next Henry the third; Edwards, one, two, and three;
And again after Richard, three Henries (sic) we see
Two Edwards, third Edward, if I rightly judge
Two Henries, sixth Edward, Queen Mary, Queen Bess;

Then Jemie the Scotchman, then Chas. whom they slew
Yet received after Cromwell another Charles too
Next James the second ascended the throne
Then good William and Mary together came on
(two illegible words) Georges four, and fourth William all past
God sent us Victoria, may she long be the last.

Since he names the author of other item, but signed this himself, I assume that he composed it himself. You will note that the first twelve are the same as the twelve in Richard Holmes' poem, so I assume both are correct. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the rest of it, since my 1911 Britannica does not appear to have a list of English kings. Is the list correct otherwise? (The illegible words appear to he something like "Will Anne").

Dear Editor:
I hope the US Post Office doesn't bite off its tongue-in-cheek. When they issued the 2-cent stamp with the slogan "Freedom to speak out," I finally got to put in my 2 cents worth.

Anyone who was associated with the recent article "Personalities Against the Wall" as contributed by Doug Chang should be judged their peers. In rebuttal I would like to submit the three important vegetables in the garden -- lettuce, turnip and pea.

Dear Editor,
Your recent comments on Mr. W. Casey (Y. QRCIU) reminded me of my attempt to find a complete pronouncing alphabet wherein none of the words would sound like the letter they represent. I have managed to find words for nineteen of the letters and would appreciate readers' suggestions for the other seven.
